Honduras Overwhelmed By US Midfield, Running Water

By Les Moore

(Chicago / June 8, 2009) The Honduran national team came to Chicago with high hopes. They head back to Tegucigalpa fighting demoralization.

Coach Reynaldo Rueda said, "We started the game strong but faded as the game went on. We won't make excuses but the running water in our hotel stayed on all night. Perhaps our players should not have stayed up late filling 10-gallon bottles of water for future use."

"I felt that we were the quicker team but lacked determination on defense. Having armed roaming death squads terrorize your village tends to do that to a player."

Midfielder Mauricio Sabillón said "We anticipated that the US midfield would be strong but I still can't imagine how enormous the generator that powers this village must be. I don't think the electricity failed the whole time we were here, and we were here for two days. And we had the TV on in the room and everything."

"After losing an early lead, it will be difficult to return to my village. But thankfully I was able to acquire these blankets, towels, and hangers from our hotel."

"Football can be cruel. So can returning to subsistence farming at a corporate banana processing compound after you've had air conditioning and a $25/day per diem."
