(May 23, 2009/Washington, DC) With DC United unexpectedly close to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference, experts say their fans should be insufferable by June.
In pubs, internet cafes, frat houses, and homeless shelters around greater Washington, fans are already beginning to wonder aloud if the 2009 squad is the greatest MLS team ever. Experts say that is typically a precursor to the increased insufferability of the team, whose fans won't ever let us forget, is the league's most decorated.
Saul Small, an expert, says that despite winning the US Open Cup, DC fans were slightly less insufferable than usual in 2008, as measured by the number of times that fans reminded the public that DC has the best fans and most trophies in MLS.
"It wasn't a huge quantitative shift. Make no mistake, they were still insufferable. Just a little bit less insufferable."
But with low expectations entering 2009 and an unsettled stadium situation, the insufferability quotient was lower than at any time since Ray Hudson was coach. Says Small, "We, the experts, believe that, with the team in first place, insufferability is on the upswing. A few more good results and we'll never hear the end of their insufferable verbal chest-beating."
Experts also say that it is anticipated that St. Louis United fans will be insufferable by June 2011.
