For David Beckham, it was a case of "Good News, Bad News".
After years of playing soccer at the highest levels at Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy, age has evidently caught up with Beckham. But it's not all bad news. Shortly after signing a lucrative contract to play in a Mediterranean retirement league he also picked up a huge new sponsorship deal with Old Spice.
"After failing so ignominously in MLS, I was as surprised as anyone when Old Spice called," said Simon Fuller, Beckham's manager. "Initially, we couldn't figure out why Old Spice, of all companies, would want to use Dave as their corporate spokesperson, but I suppose we just reckoned that they wanted a celebrity-driven strategy."
"I mean, who wouldn't want to smell like David Beckham? Well, maybe not the MLS player, he stunk."
"After our agency finishes this campaign," said Oliver Blanc, branding director for Old Spice, "people will truly associate Old Spice with the English soccer icon."
"We are determined to drive home the message that David Beckham is Old Spice."
